Baby Gravy

Recipe: Look. It's NOT what it sounds like, ok?

The recipe is from my Grandma Pauls and my dad used to make it to put on his waffles. I recall not liking it, though I also have no memory of ever eating it. I think I just didn't want to get my waffles soggy (same is true today :-). If I had to take a guess at the name, maybe it was something fed to tiny babies because it was milky, sweet, otherwise bland, and required no chewing?... Now I just want to write it down where I can't lose it.

In a small saucepan, melt together:
1 T butter or shortening
1 T flour

Add and cook until almost thick:
1 c. milk

Add and cook until thick:
1/3 c. sugar
1/2 t. vanilla
